American International School of Abuja Chess Club Group Photo

By Chess Master Paul Onwueme

It's with delight I share these photos with you all. AISA has two chess clubs for one for elementary and the other for High School.

I was priviledged to hold a match between both clubs which was evenly balanced as the pupils showed great team spirit and resolve to outwit each other.

Of course the trimester is over having completed 8 weeks!

Abuja Chess School

Welcome to the PIO Chess School - a team of devoted chess lovers - which is an Academy founded by Paul Onwueme to provide excellent thinking techniques for school children using proven and effective methods via the intellectually stimulating game of chess.

Our Vision is to use chess to develop highly creative and analytical minds that can solve problems and create effective solutions that would benefit mankind.

Our Mission is to use Chess lessons to train children to become very sound intellectually, emotionally and socially so they can imbibe impressive reasoning and problem solving skills.

Why we need Chess in Abuja Schools

Chess is the most mentally stimulating game in the world and has been proven to contribute significantly to the intellectual development of school children through a structured program.

In 26 countries of the world including, the United States, Brasil, Netherlands, Venezueala and Turkey to mention a few, chess has been introduced in a varying number of ways; as an extra-curricular activity or as a subject in the regular school curriculum by both private and public schools.

Unlike other board games, chess is highly stimulating, entertaining and strategically challenging making its players to think critically and creatively of ways to solve problems created on the board. It’s a battle of wits and guts.

How Chess in Abuja Schools Will Work

In 26 countries where chess in schools has been formally adopted as a school program various methods either as a subject in schools or as an after school activity.

Chess Scheme for Pupils
·         1 hour weekly chess session
·         The pupils are first taught how to play the game (Beginner classes)
·         Then the kids are taught thinking techniques such as problem solving, concentration and planning through chess puzzles and tests (intermediate class)
·        The School may choose to purchase its own chess equipments or simply require the chess instructor to provide his.
·        Chess equipments used in class: Demonstration board, chess sets and work book (optional)

Global Studies of the impact of Chess in Schools
Dr Peter Dauvergne of the university of sydney conducted a study on the impact of chess in schools (1979-83) and came up with the following findings;

·         Raises intelligence quotient (IQ) scores
·         Strengthens problem solving skills, teaching how to make difficult and abstract  decisions independently
·         Enhances reading, memory, language, and mathematical abilities
·         Fosters critical, creative, and original thinking
·         Provides practice at making accurate and fast decisions under time pressure, a skill that can help improve exam scores at school
·         Teaches how to think logically and efficiently, learning to select the ‘best’ choice from a large number of options
·         Challenges gifted children while potentially helping underachieving gifted students  learn how to study and strive for excellence
·         Demonstrates the importance of flexible planning, concentration, and the consequences of decisions
·         Reaches boys and girls regardless of their natural abilities or socio-economic backgrounds

In Italy a study on 50 selected schools found a significant improvement in Maths scores for children actively involved in chess in Schools. (Pulgar, 2010).

World renowned Chartered Psychologist Dr Fiona Starr has this to say about chess in schools: “I think it is a great idea to introduce chess into schools - logic, strategy, planning skills, visuo-spatial skills, turn taking, dealing with losing and fun! What's not to like?”

Setting up an In-house Chess Academy for your School

If you own or run a School in Abuja I would like to invite your able management to consider setting up an Academy for your school as a way of contributing to intellectual development of the pupils. Through chess, your pupils will be exposed to effective thinking techniques that would impact positively on their mental abilities and ultimately improved academic performances.

My background as a Chess Instructor
